How to become an Essentialist

Hello friends!

If you feel that you get very little time for your work, which makes you confuse and refuse to achieve much, then this topic is for you and for this we have to pay attention to some things like - Essentialism

What is essentialism?
Essentialism is a systematic discipline that teaches where you should invest your time and energy to achieve the highest level.

1. Become the editor of your own life - Say "I have to do" rather than "I have chosen to do it" -

We often say that I have to do this work, I have to go there, etc. But by saying so, we are forgetting an important thing that we always have a choice whether to do any work or not. We have to choose the work that is necessary for us.

Like, Blockbuster movies are ruthlessly edited before release so that the audience can understand the story better. So the editor removes all the scenes which are not necessary.

Today's time busy lifestyle has become a status symbol because people have heard that it is necessary to do hard work to get something in life, which makes them feel hard work to be busy and all the offers, projects, opportunities they get are put in their already filled to-do-list. Here hard work is not described as wrong but hard work in the wrong way is a waste of time and energy.

For example- Suppose a man runs 1km in all directions from a point, but he ran 4 km still, he ran only one km in one direction from his starting point. While another man ran 4km from one point in only one direction, that man must have gone 4km in that direction from his starting point. In both these cases, the input was one but there was a huge difference in the output. So what things you ignore are as important as what things you choose.

2. We can't do everything -

Most people who are non-essentialist think that they can solve all the problems and if they are given 3-4 problems then they will think that they can solve all the problems. In such a situation, either they will not be able to work or they will do it in an average way. But an essentialist knows that all the problems cannot be solved and something will definitely remain, he asks himself which problem he would like to take, which means he is choosing which work to do and which not.

Being busy all the time does not mean that you are working productively. If you think deeply, you will realize that most of your work is not necessary as much as we consider those works to be necessary.

You must have heard about the Pareto principle that 80% of your results come from only 20% of your efforts and the remaining 20% results from 80% of your efforts. But, being busy all the time, most people focus on 80% efforts that will give them 20% results, no matter how hard they try, they are never able to achieve what they want to achieve and that is why they leave that work. There is no doubt that people work hard but heroic results will be achieved by working in the right things and not on all things. You must have also seen that the lift in the building comes up by pressing the correct button and not by pressing all the buttons. So you need to know that which is 20% effort which will give you 80% results.

First of all, we should understand that we do a business of our time and energy at all times. Whenever you say yes to anything, then inadvertently you speak no to rest work which may be important for you.

Let's take an example - Suppose if your friend calls you to visit and watch the film, then if you say yes, then at the same time you are inadvertently speaking no to the rest of the work. If you don't choose where your time and energy should be used, then someone else will choose for you such as your boss, your friends, colleagues, etc. and you will not want to see this happen.

3. Learn to say "No" -
Art designer Paul Rand who designed logos of companies like IBM, ENRON, ABC, Westinghouse. But he refused to make a logo for Steve Jobs because Steve Jobs wanted a variant of the logo from Paul Rand for the logo of his company NEXT, but Paul said that he would not create that variant, and also said that if he wanted the option/variant, he could go to someone else, but later Paul Rand made the same logo according to Steve Jobs' requirement. Steve Jobs liked very much and he also admitted that Paul Rand was the most professional person among those working with him, it was a great experience of his life.

Significantly, when Paul Rand said no to Steve Jobs, for a short time he became unpopular in the mind of Steve Jobs but in the long-term, he got respect from Steve Jobs and the Apple company also launched a poster of Paul Rand's think different.

It must have happened to you that you don't want to speak "yes" to anyone, but to make him happy you would have said "yes" to him and would later regret that if you had not said "yes", it would have been right. Sometimes it can be difficult to say "No" to people because you think that maybe it will spoil your relationship but if you want to be effective then you have to learn it. There is no doubt that because of this, you will be unpopular for a short time, but it will be very effective in the long-term. You have to remember that you are rejecting that person's request and not that person. You can use any of these methods to say "No" to people.

Such as -
Artificial Delay - Whenever you are not 100% sure in saying "yes" to a person's request, then try this method. Tell the person that "I have much other important work is still pending, so I can't promise you right now, but I will definitely tell you by checking the schedule". So that you can think about that request whether or not that request is essential for you.

Suggest Someone Else - If anyone offers you something in which you are not interested at all and you think that someone else will be genuinely interested in that offer, then you can suggest that offer to an interested person. You don't have to say no to everyone, say "no" to the thing that is non-essential for you so that you can say "yes" to those things that matter most in your life. As you continue to work in your essential things, you will continue to progress in your field. Then you will get many opportunities and more and more people will want to work with you.
But if you do not recognize your essential and non-essential things then this success can also cause you to fail which is called Paradox of success.

4. Setting boundaries - You have to do all those essential things every day with a routine.

So that you do some work every day which is necessary for you, like you have done a lot of work for a week and you haven't done work for the whole month, then you are ignoring your important work which is not right.

Whenever you make a routine of essential tasks, you have to make a routine of half an hour extra for every job always because suppose you have made an hour routine to do every work and it is time to do your work and someone comes to meet you, in such a situation you can spend half an hour more for your work. Our essential work makes us essentialist.
